After our previous trips to the far north, which we thoroughly enjoyed, we had planned a new Nordic adventure for 2025: this time, we wanted to spend two weeks (from June 7th to June 21st, 2025) in Iceland and - an absolute first for us - we wanted to travel there in a motorhome. Our long-time travel companions Andrea and Harry had already taken such a trip two years earlier. Their reports and their great travel video got us hooked.
After extensive research, we booked the entire trip, including flights and camper rental, at the end of 2024. Everything was straightforward, and the trip went perfectly.
All in all, we covered a good 3,300 km in our camper van, traveling counterclockwise around Iceland. Our route can be seen on the map above, starting and ending in Keflavik.
The trip was simply overwhelming! Hardly any other country combines so many contrasts: green forests, blue lupine fields, bizarre lava fields without any vegetation, wide plains, and imposing, snow-capped mountains. Add to that the countless waterfalls, the huge glaciers, and the boundless expanse—we couldn’t stop marveling at it all. Iceland is a natural wonder that you simply have to experience for yourself!
A very special highlight of the trip were our two visits to the puffin colonies on the Dyrhólaey peninsula near the town of Vik and in Borgarfjarðarhöfn in the Westfjords. Here we had plenty of opportunities to observe and photograph the cute puffins up close. I took so many beautiful pictures that I have now created my own puffin calendar from the best ones.

We particularly enjoyed the freedom in our own motorhome. We lived in it completely for two weeks, cooking, sleeping, and showering in it. It’s like having your hotel with you at all times, so you can relax with a coffee anytime, anywhere. We only went to restaurants twice. The freedom to decide spontaneously where to go at any time is wonderful. We only used the campsites for supplies, waste disposal, and electricity.
If you would like to find out more about Iceland, I have now written another extensively illustrated travel report “Iceland 2025″ about this amazing trip here on the website.
