The alarm clock rang at 6:00 a.m., and at 7:00 a.m., we set off at dawn (the sun came up at 8:31 a.m.) on our day trip to Senja, Norway’s second-largest island, located west of Tromsø.

Although the island is only about 90 km away from Tromsø, the rugged landscape with its many fjords and the road conditions (snow and ice) meant that it took us a good three hours to cover the 180 km distance. Unfortunately, the weather was not very kind to us. It rained on and off.

The landscape was stunning. It reminded us partly of the rugged Westfjords in Iceland, partly of the Engadin in Switzerland. Here are some impressions from the rainy drive:

Red wooden cabins can be found all over Norway, providing a beautiful color contrast to the blue sea and sky:

Okay, the sky wasn’t really that blue this time 😉.

Unfortunately, the weather was terrible all day long, so we decided that we would have to go back there again, perhaps with a motorhome on a longer tour of Norway.

In Fjordgård, we first looked for a café and found a very nice one. Harry wrote something in the guest book, which was immediately placed in front of us. From here, you can start a hike on the Segla Trail. Segla is the steep mountain that appears in many photos of Senja.

The hike to the mountain peak is popular on Senja. A steep path leads up the south side of the mountain to the summit, which is 639 meters above sea level. Once at the top, you have a magnificent view of Mefjord and the surrounding mountains. The steep western cliff gives anyone who dares to look over the edge an adrenaline rush.

But the trail was impassable in the rain. What’s more, the hike along the steep coastline was far beyond our alpine skills. Instead, we opted for the much easier option and launched the drones.

For the way back, we took a shortcut and boarded the ferry from Botnhamn to Brensholmen on the island of Kvaloya. The crossing took about 40 minutes and was around €20. Only the license plate number was registered on board, and the cost was added to the final rental car bill. Very convenient!

From the harbour, it was still a good 1 1/2 hour drive back to our vacation apartment, where we spent a quiet evening.
