November 1st to November 8th, 2025

As I already mentioned at the end of my report about our first trip to Tromsø, we made plans to go back there. Now, the time had finally come. With the same group as at the turn of the year, we made another visit to Tromsø and the surrounding area. Since we were now a little more familiar with the area, we booked a very nice apartment in a central location this time. We were excited to see the city and its surroundings in sunlight, and we hoped to see the Northern Lights again. And we did see them:

Equipment

The photographic equipment I took with me was essentially unchanged from the previous trip. Instead of the 70-200mm f/2.8L, however, I took the 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 L IS II USM with me this time, as we had planned another whale safari and I was hoping for a little more light.

In addition, for aurora photography, I have now replaced my Samyang 14mm f/2.8 AF with the much faster Sigma 14mm F1.8 DG HSM Art*, thanks to a very good second-hand offer on eBay. The lens is considerably larger and heavier than the Samyang, but it is also almost 2 f-stops faster, which makes it ideal for night photography. The optical quality—even at open aperture—is outstanding. The current price/performance ratio of the lens on the used market is absolutely unbeatable.

Apart from that, my trusty DJI Air 3s drone was also on board again and was used frequently.

cYou can find lots more details and information about recommended equipment for trips to Tromsø and the surrounding area in my first Tromsø travel report.
