June 21st, 2025 - Going home
The night was short. The alarm clock went off at 4:00 a.m., and after a quick breakfast, we walked the short distance to the airport. After checking in, we were able to relax in the lounge for a while before our flight took off on time. The flight was pleasant, taking us over the Färöer Islands.

to Frankfurt. Our daughter was already waiting for us there and took us back home.
Epilogue
Our trip to Iceland was simply overwhelming! Hardly any other country combines so many contrasts: green forests, blue lupine fields, bizarre lava fields without any vegetation, wide plains, and imposing, snow-covered mountains. Add to that the countless waterfalls, the huge glaciers, and the boundless expanse—we couldn’t stop admiring it all. Iceland is a natural wonder that you simply have to experience for yourself!
A very special highlight of the trip were our two visits to the puffin colonies on the Dyrhólaey peninsula near the town of Vik and in Borgarfjarðarhöfn in the Westfjords. Here we had plenty of opportunities to observe and photograph the cute puffins up close. I took so many beautiful pictures that I have now created my own puffin calendar from the best ones:

We particularly enjoyed the freedom of having our own motorhome. We lived in it full-time, cooking, sleeping, and showering in it. It’s like having your hotel with you at all times, so you can relax with a coffee anytime, anywhere. We only went to restaurants twice. The freedom to decide spontaneously where to go at any time is wonderful. We only used the campsites for supplies, waste disposal, and electricity.
Traveling in a motorhome has completely captivated us! So much so that we are now seriously considering buying our own vehicle in the long term. We don’t yet know exactly what our ideal motorhome should look like. Our camper in Iceland was perfect there, but it would probably be too big for the narrow streets of the picturesque villages in France or Italy.
We would also like to explore Iceland’s central regions in the future, which is only permitted with off-road four-wheel drive vehicles. And finally, we would like to be more autonomous. At the beautiful Melanes campsite in the Westfjords, for example, there were no supply or disposal facilities and only a few power points. It would not have been possible to stay there for several days with our basic motorhome.
That’s why we’ve got something special planned for this December: we’re going to rent a highly autarkic 4x4 Mercedes Sprinter van and spend two weeks exploring northern Italy. We’re already super excited – and of course, we’ll be sharing more about it in future posts!
