Originally built in the 1590s, the castle was destroyed by the atomic bombing in 1945. The replica, built in 1958, now serves as a museum for the history of Hiroshima before World War II.
The Itsukushima Shrine and the Torii were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996.
World famous is the wooden torii of the Itsukushima Shrine from 1875, which is located about 160 meters in front of the shrine. At low tide it can be reached by foot.
The island of Miyajima lies about twenty kilometers southwest of Hiroshima. The Itsukushima Shrine is located on the island.
